Kiawah Girl
Set in the year 1695, Kiawah Girl introduces the reader to the vibrant, diverse society of the earliest days of colonial Charleston, SC. This delightful work of historical fiction weaves historical fact with an imaginative tale of growing up the daughter of an English Settler and a Kiawah Native American. The main character, Emily Blake, tells her story through journal entries that chronicle the daily life of a strong-minded nine year old caught between worlds and supported by an extended family. Kiawah Girl is the first in a series of books that describe a fascinating period in American history that is rarely explored from this unique perspective.

Pass It On
The Cooper School Poetry Anthology-2010
In 2009, The Cooper School launched Pass It On, A Collection of Children’s Poetry, Volume I. The first volume of Pass It On was composed of poems written exclusively by Cooper School children. In that volume, we announced our intention to create a publication that would showcase the talents of young poets from throughout the Charleston community.
Pass It On, Volume II fulfills that intention by including poetry submitted by young children attending Chicora School of Communications, Montessori Community School of Charleston, Ashley Hall School, and Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School, in addition to poems crafted by Cooper School students. The selection committee read through hundreds of poems and selected fine examples of children’s poetry for our first community-wide collection of Children’s poetry.
In January 2010, Cooper School students joined the world by responding to the enormous need Haiti experienced in the wake of the earthquake. Cooper School students decided to use their writing talent to communicate their hopes for Haiti and to solicit funds for relief efforts. This year all proceeds from the sale of Pass It On will be donated to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development efforts. So, this year, Pass It On is not only a venue for Charleston children to exhibit their talents, it is a vehicle for Charleston children to communicate their compassion for others and to solicit support for people in need.
If you would like your class to participate in Pass It On, Volume III, please email info@thecooperschool.org.
